Best for: small to mid fleets that want Snipe-IT’s simplicity without the server. Skip if: you need EU data residency commitments or framework-mapped evidence exports.

3. EZO AssetSonar

AssetSonar is the ITAM member of the EZO suite, with deeper software-license and contract tracking than most of this list and agent plus network discovery. It is a bigger platform than Snipe-IT in every direction, including the procurement process to buy it. Reviewers consistently rate the license-compliance tooling; the trade-off is generalist breadth across the EZO family rather than a single sharp focus.

Best for: teams whose pain is software license compliance and vendor audits. Skip if: you want a lightweight register and a fast rollout.

4. Lansweeper

Lansweeper is a different shape: discovery-first. It scans networks and builds a technical inventory of everything that answers, which makes it superb at the “what is actually out there” question and much weaker at custody: who holds this laptop, what state is it in, did it come back at offboarding. Best for: network-heavy estates that need continuous technical discovery. Skip if: your fleet is mostly laptops and people, where custody beats scanning.

5. Timly

Timly is a Swiss cloud inventory platform, strong in DACH, that tracks IT gear alongside everything else a company owns: tools, vehicles, machines, furniture. QR-code workflows and maintenance scheduling are the core loop. That breadth is the appeal and the caveat: it is inventory management that includes IT, not an ITAM tool with an IT-shaped data model.

Best for: organisations that want one system for all physical inventory, IT included. Skip if: you need software, license, and identity data in the same register as the hardware.

6. Setyl

Setyl, UK-built, combines an asset register with license and spend management and integrates widely with MDM and identity providers. It is probably the closest of the list to OnTrackio’s cloud shape. The differences that decide it: Setyl leans into spend visibility across the SaaS estate, we lean into audit evidence and an endpoint agent of our own; their pricing is quote-shaped at the top end, ours is public.

Best for: finance-adjacent IT teams that want cost visibility with their register. Skip if: evidence exports and EU-region residency guarantees are the deciding factor.

7. Shelf.nu

Shelf.nu is the open-source register that gets recommended to teams leaving Snipe-IT but not leaving self-hosting. It is modern, pleasant, and considerably younger than Snipe-IT, with the maturity gap you would expect: fewer integrations, a smaller community, less battle testing. If open source is a requirement rather than a preference, weigh it against simply staying put.

Best for: open-source-first teams that want a fresher codebase. Skip if: you are leaving Snipe-IT to stop operating servers, because this does not stop that.

The eighth option: stay on Snipe-IT

Snipe-IT remains the best free self-hosted asset register there is, with over a decade of development and a real community. If your instance is maintained, your fleet is stable, and no audit is converting your register into evidence, migration buys you little beyond a subscription invoice. Name the constraint, not just the job. If the constraint is free and self-hosted, Snipe-IT is the honest winner and nothing on this list changes that.
